Teacher of the year, Claudia Phillippe accepts award from VFW Calabash Post 7288 Auxiliary Patriotic Instructor Dorrie Mascolo while Principal Sam Jennings & assistant Principal Crystal Walker looks on.

First Grade teacher Claudia Phillippe was recently presented the teacher of the year award by the VFW Calabash Post 7288 Auxiliary. Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars invite elementary, middle, and high school teachers to participate in the Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher program.

Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism are prime candidates to be nominated for this award. Without our nation’s veterans, America wouldn't be the great nation it is today. Our youth deserve to learn about our rich history, traditions and the role of our veterans in creating and shaping America. Claudia was chosen as this years VFW Calabash Post 7288 winner. She teaches at Union Elementary School and loved by her students. Congratulations.
