A cold, windy and overcast late winter’s day didn’t stop 144 golfers who came to the Brunswick Plantation golf course to honor the memory of a former Veterans of Foreign war (VFW) member and friend. VFW Calabash Post 7288 hosted a memorial golf tournament in remembrance of past commander Tommy McCormack on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
Thomas William McCormack, 75, of Sunset Beach, N. C. died on June 6, 2022. He was a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He was retired from the Verizon Communication Corporation. Originally from Bronx, NY, he moved to Sunset Beach in 2002. He became a member of VFW Calabash Post 7288 in 2003. Tommy was proud to be a member of the post serving as commander, canteen manager and bartender.
Tommy was married to Helen McCormack for 52 years and together they had a son, Brian, and two daughters, Jennifer and Colleen. Brian played in the tournament as did Tommy’s grandchildren, Kylie and Evan. Tommy was an avid golfer and a member of Sandpaper Bay Golf Club.
Helen recalled “Tommy loved golf, but more importantly, he loved being part of the VFW Calabash Post and all the friendships he made there. He would have been honored to know a tournament was named as a memorial to him. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, missed by family and friends. This is a lovely way to remember him.”
