March 29, 2026- Calabash, NC- Members of VFW Calabash post 7288, friends and guests, celebrated National Vietnam War Veterans Remembrance Day on March 29, 2026 with a ceremony at the post. Fifteen veterans, who served in Vietnam, posed for a group photo and were honored by their friends and family. Post Commander, Wayne Grigsby, addressed the veterans thanking them for their service and reminding them what a crucial role they played as a positive influence to today’s generation of warriors.

A cake with the words “Welcome Home” reminds the veterans that, while perhaps forgotten when they returned from an unpopular war, they answered their nations call, served honorably and are remembered with the respect they deserve by a grateful nation today.

Even now, more than 50 years later, some veterans find it difficult to remember the events of their youth. One veteran told the group he can’t visit the Vietnam wall because it would be too emotional. While others nodded in agreement, It was apparent that all the veterans appreciated the recognition for their service.

The gathered group paused to honor a brother who recently passed. World War II veteran Leo Jarmusz, 106 years old, was the posts oldest living World War II veteran. He was fondly remembered for his youthful enthusiasm at post functions when he could often be found dancing the night away. He will be missed.

Korean veteran and active post member, Willie Keefe, was honored as the oldest veteran of the post.

On March 28, 2017, President Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017. This act officially recognizes March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. March 29th was chosen because that was the day that the last of the U. S. troops were withdrawn in 1973.
