VFW Auxiliary Members Bring Christmas Cheer To Local Charities

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Calabash Post 7288 Auxiliary had a busy agenda on Friday December 12th as they drove around South Brunswick county playing Santa for some worthwhile community charities. VFW Calabash Post 7288 Auxiliary President Cathy Milstead and Patriotic Instructor Dorrie Mascolo presented a $500 check to each of four organizations that the VFW Calabash Post 7288 Auxiliary membership has voted to continue supporting annually at their December meeting.

First stop was St. Brendans church food pantry, Loaves and Fishes, located at 5101 Ocean Highway West in Shallotte. This food pantry serves more than 500 people and families per month. VFW Calabash Post 7288 Auxiliary presented a $500 Check to coordinator Bert McGoff to support this important community project.

Next stop was another food pantry, The Lords Food Pantry at 3610 Express Dr, Shallotte, NC. Sponsored by the South Brunswick Inter-church Council (SBIC), they are a group of Shallotte Churches who have been cooperating to provide food to those in need since 1981. The member churches of SBIC collaborate and provide volunteers to maintain and support the Pantry. The VFW Auxiliary is proud to support their efforts and presented a $500 check to SBIC President Mike Claxton.

Auxiliary members next stopped at Union Elementary School in Shallotte where Vice Principle Meghan Wilson accepted a $500 check to support their Coat Closet and help supply warm coats and other school supplies to underprivileged and needy children.

The final stop was at the Waccamaw elementary school in Ash. Principal Roman Kelley and staff members also accepted a $500 check to help supply warm coats and other school supplies to underprivileged and needy children. 

“It feels so good to support our community” said Auxiliary President Cathy Milstead. “They are all so appreciative. It really gets you into the Christmas spirit.”

VFW Calabash Post 7288 Auxiliary raises funds for community programs by sponsoring events like the weekly Bingo game at the post every Thursday evening, doors open at 4 pm. coming soon is the annual Lenten Fish Fry being held at the post each Friday from February 20th through April 3rd, 2026. The post is located  at 900 Carter Ave and the public is invited to attend both events.
